Happy Canada Day!

Happy 141st Birthday my home and native land! Canada is celebrating July 1 in fine style for her birthday, and I invite you to take part no matter where you are!

On another note, I heard people grumbling about the fact that the holiday falls on a Tuesday and they were upset that it broke up the week. There was news of a movement to move the celebration to make sure that it always falls on a Monday. Come on you people, wake up! July 1 is the holiday and lots of the time it will be found on days other than Monday so just quit complaining and enjoy the spirit of the day. It’s our birthday! Celebrate!

A Must See Movie!

I saw Wall*e today, the new Pixar film that stars a little robot. This post is not a spoiler, so there is much that I cannot say. This is a brilliant tale, told almost without words but with tremendous spirit and language in spite of that. If you have the least inclination to see any movie this summer, make this one it. Take your children too, because not only will they love it, they’re going to have some things to discuss with you.

What's the difference between coaching, consulting and counselling?

Are they really that different?

Many of my colleagues have studied one, two or all three areas and have the benefit of working out what is best with a particular client, because there are some distinct differences. Some coaches (we're talking about coaches who are not sports coaches) work under the premise that the client has all the answers within them, and coaching will help the client to realize what they know, and come to an understanding of their own answers to pressing questions and issues. There is no hard and fast definition of coaching, and when you do find one, it could also be applied to consulting, teaching and training in many cases.

Consulting is (according to Webster’s) to seek the opinion or advice of another; to take counsel; to deliberate together; to confer. The word comes from the Latin consultare, which means to discuss, and where we get words like consul and counsel. If you ask a consultant a question, they provide you with an answer, whereas a “coach” may guide you in finding your own answers. Consultants may also coach, but do so with the understanding that sometimes the client does NOT have the knowledge that they seek, and so they need some direct instruction is really the most efficient path. You cannot coach an airline pilot to fly a plane; you teach them. When people are considering careers, however, it makes sense that you use coaching as a way for them to explore what they’d like to do for a career.

Counselling has the same Latin root as the word consulting. To offer counselling, you generally need to have completed at least a master’s degree and sometimes also a doctorate depending on where you live. Some people think that if they see a counsellor they will spend lots of time thinking about and reviewing their past, but this is really not the case. Your counsellor will need to understand who you are, where you have come from but the focus is on what is happening now, and how to make the most of today and your future.

Here is a handy little guide to defining the 3 C’s in terms of education. It’s not written in cement, but it might help.

In order to be certified as a “counsellor” you need a master’s degree in psychology, education or, not surprisingly, counselling. Lots of counsellors also have a doctorate or are working on one. There are exceptions for some titles, for example “employment counsellors” don’t need a master’s degree in order to certify as a career development professional, but they will if they want to certify as a professional member of a counselling association. Counsellors have the ability to provide very in depth testing and analysis as well as to provide different types of counselling (i.e. cognitive-behavioural, neuro-linguistic, career and so on).

“Consultants” can come from any background and have any kind of training. They generally have a lot of expertise in at least one area, backed up either by formal education and/or a considerable amount of time invested in their field. There are no regulatory requirements for certifying as a consultant, but most of them will belong to professional associations related to their field of expertise (such as engineering, management, human resources, etc.). Those associations will ensure that a certified consultant stays current within their field.

“Coaches” are an unregulated field, although there are plenty of certifying bodies that have grown up as the field has grown in the last twenty years. They may specialize or restrict their practice to one particular niche, like career, executive, relationship or life coaching. A reputable coach has usually completed a “coaching certificate”. I’ve seen coaching programs that charge anywhere from about $1500 to $25,000 and the results that you achieve are not linked to the money you invest in training. Some inexpensive programs are great, and some expensive ones are just expensive.

If you’re thinking about hiring somebody to work with you, make sure you understand what they do in terms of coaching, consulting or counselling, and if you aren't sure, just ask.

Summer time and the living is easy...

Sunshine and colour
Barbecues and lawnmowers
Sand and pebbles

I love this time of year. The flowers and garden are coming along beautifully and the birds are hopping about happily in the yard and taking advantage of the birdbath. Oh summer, glorious and wonderful summer. You are so welcome!

Cold Calls with a Warm Message

I’ve been cold calling and making in person sales calls this week. It’s an interesting foray into previously unfamiliar territory. Before I moved my business 5000 kms I was pretty well known and so did not have to do a lot of active marketing. One speaking or training event led nicely to several more and so there was a flow to it. That and I also had a full time job, so when there was no flow it was not really a big deal.

However I knew that moving to a new area would change things and that I would have to step outside my comfort zone in order to make a dint in my new home region. I actually started the week with an uncharacteristically bad attitude about making the calls and visits that are so important; I do not want to cold call, do not like to cold call and that sort of thing. I did some conscious work about breaking barriers (thanks in part to mentoring with folks who are absolutely amazing) and finally made up my mind to stop procrastinating and get started! As with many things it was not so bad, nothing awful happened, and once again I have met some fascinating people who live and work in the most interesting places.

So here’s my warm call out to my blog readers...let me know what you think of my approach :o)

Ahem...place call...ring ring

Hello (insert name). My name is Pam Robertson and I work with Bob Proctor’s LifeSuccess Consultants. We are committed to helping individuals and companies to achieve better personal and professional results. We provide a variety of different programs and training that help people understand their own results and how they get them, so that they can make lasting improvements in any area of their life.

My purpose in reaching out to you today is to see if you would be interested in learning more about the services that we provide. I can offer you a free 30 or 60 minute session at one of your staff meetings, a leader’s retreat or lunch and learn session that will provide your people with meaningful insight and a way to get started right now. If you’d prefer, I can also come and speak to you personally with more information.

Is this something that you would be interested in learning more about?

but but but

My very dear friend called me today, and she is on a mission. Today it struck her how many times she uses the word “but”. Not “butt” as in your derriere, but the other “but”, the one that negates everything in front of it. I have also been guilty of this, and so we've made a pledge.

You know the but that I mean, don't you? Like when you say “honey, I love you dearly…but your feet are smelly” and all of a sudden honey is feeling very unloved because you are not thinking anything about love. You are focussed on smelly feet.

Or when your friend pours out her heart and is completely distraught about something in her life, and you open your big mouth with “but…” and cancel out everything she’s just said.

So here’s the challenge; say what you mean, mean what you say. Try to avoid “but” and see what kind of endearing conversations you can be a part of this week.

Sad Times

Bridgewater, Nova Scotia is back on the international map today. Last winter the community was pulled into action to find a girl who was first thought to have run away following an argument with her mother. After a massive search and two weeks of freezing miserable weather, the young girl’s body was found on a river bank just outside of town. Four months later, her mother has been charged with pre-meditated murder.

That poor child; the last thing she would know on this planet were that her mother was taking her life.

I’m a human being, and a mother. I’ve been a single mother for far more years than I was a married mother. I’ve been depressed, broke, frustrated and at the end of my own rope, and yet even in my darkest, most trying moments I cannot think of what would drive a mother to take the life of her child. Yeah, I know about all kinds of mental illness, desperation, frustration, all those aspects of what may have been going on in this mother’s life. I know that kids can push our buttons and that no matter what their age or gender, they can seem to make us loopy at times. Despite that, I still cannot fathom what would lead a mother to take the life of her own child. No wonder the community finds it difficult to now support the mother; there is not a lot of discussion about innocent until proven guilty. There is heartbreak and sadness all over again.

MVPi ready to launch!

What a busy little office we have here this week! I have been gearing up for the big MVPi re-launch. That means I’ve been jigging the brand, the website, doing some very active marketing and working WAY outside of my comfort zone. My comfort zone includes things like development, coaching and speaking, but I have never branched into the cold calling arena. When I picked the business up and moved it 5000 kilometres across the country last year, I fully expected I would be cold calling in order to “get my name out”. But it’s something that is very new to me; in the past people were coming to me asking for help and so I didn’t have to work too hard to be acknowledged within my industry. Fortunately I am working with a couple of amazing world renowned coaches who have been able to help me through it. As someone who is normally providing coaching to others, I sure love the benefits of being coached!

I keep asking myself questions like:

  • Am I doing things in the right way to get the most exposure to the most amount of people in the shortest possible time?
  • Am I reaching people who need my help?
  • How can I make sure that the services I deliver have the greatest bang for their buck? I want to make sure that people get the most value that I can give them while giving them the best information and access to learning, materials and support that they can really use!

Coaching, writing and marketing take up a fair chunk of my week, and I am also working on the blog and finishing off my soon to be published book: Live Inspired! Create the Life of Your Dreams, which will be out by the end of this summer. This is a small book that takes some of the greatest stuff that I have learned—and used—during the past several years. It is part workbook and part journal, so I hope that it’s going to be something that people really use. Like a favourite recipe book, it's intended to be written in, thought through, and to have some page corners turned.

There are a couple of other book projects coming, which I have on the website but will also tell you about here:

Wake Up Women BE Happy, Healthy & Wealthy will be out around October 2008. This book includes some of the best coaches, consultants and authors in North America! It is about making lasting, meaningful changes in your life, and is going to be an amazing project.

Wake Up Live the Life You Love, Empowered. Experience the power that frees people to create a new life. This will be a dynamic book and includes experts like Dr. Wayne Dyer, Anthony Robbins and Brian Tracy with inspiring and meaningful writing that can change your life if you want it too. I am one of the co-authors on this book and we will be happy to share it with you as the release date gets closer.

I have a couple of questions for you:

What are you up to lately that has you operating outside of your comfort zone? What are you learning from that experience?

Live inspired!

How's that working for you?

One in three people in Canada are not satisfied in their job. One in three! I didn’t make that up; today I heard a re-broadcast of a CBC program that originally aired in November 2007, and if CBC says it…well, let’s just say that even if they’re off by a few points, one-third of the workforce being unsatisfied is sure a lot of unhappy people. Add to that the number of adults who are not working and also unhappy about their unemployed status, and all of a sudden there are a lot of people who are not being fulfilled when it comes to work.

Working full time normally consists of about 2000 hours per year. If you work on average of 40 years full time, you'll get some fluctuation due to vacations but that's roughly 80,000 hours of your life. Imagine what you can accomplish spending just one of those years doing something that you absolutely love, something that jazzes you. Now, think for a moment about how great it would feel to apply your energy to a career that really jazzes you.

Maybe it's time to do some work and live inspired.

Journey to the Highlands

Alright I did it! Mostly because one of my faithful readers asked me to...I have downloaded some recent pics off my camera (there were about 300 of them in all; I think that I need a picture organizer that will come and set up all...ah, nevermind). I will really have to get to this a little more often. These are a few shots that I took about two weeks ago, when my daughter and I took a day off and drove into the Nova Scotia highlands.

This one is of a scotch distillery, and so we stopped by to pick up a bottle of course. It smells really good inside this place. Since I rarely drink the stuff it'll wait until the next time that Dad comes for a visit.

Could not resist this shot. I have no idea how to pronounce the Gaelic name, but I'd be willing to bet one of you might know someone who knows someone...

This was the beach at Inverness that day. There was a stiff breeze and it was mighty chilly, but we really didn't care.

Here's a cliff shot.
